Banking App Savvy Savers

Founded in 2008 with support from the Scottish Government, the Leader Fund and the local council the project has flourished in to a huge success, working with over 80 schools across South Lanarkshire.

Savvy Savers - Preparing them for the future

The project aims to teach children of all ages how to manage their finances, and to understand debt and its effects in a fun and educating way. With relation to the "Curriculum for Excellence", the Project covers skills such as numeracy, literacy, health and wellbeing, and also aspects of social studies.

The project also works with schools to help them establish their own Credit Union and teach children to run them independently, helping children gain valuable employment and communication skills and building their confidence.

Children are given the opportunity to apply for positions in their school's Credit Union, with that they are also given an interview. This is a great opportunity for them to gain experience for the future, giving them an insight into what it would be like to apply for a job. Positions available to pupils are; Supervisor, Cashier, Teller and Development Worker.

Savvy Savers - What others have to say

Scottish Government MSP's - Business Minister, Fergus Ewing and Minister for Learning, Dr Alasdair Allan visited Thistle Credit Union In May of 2015. They had a great time hearing from our young savers and had a lot of great things to say about their time.

“Today's visit has been extremely useful and a great opportunity to find out more about junior savings schemes from the young savers themselves, teachers, LCU staff and volunteers. We've discussed how the scheme works, its advantages and lessons learned. The Scottish Government recognises the valuable role played by credit unions in providing financial services and products to a wide range of customers, which is why I set up a Credit Union Working Group to consider the further promotion of credit unions in Scotland.”

- Business Minister, Fergus Ewing
“The results here in Lanarkshire are very encouraging and it just goes to show that it's never too early to start thinking about financial education. Ensuring all our children have the academic and life skills they need to flourish and thrive in life is a key priority for this government.”

- Minister for Learning, Dr Alasdair Allan
